Hi dudes & dudettes,

If you still happen to have been frequenting AVOTD, you've definitely noticed a significant hiatus as of late. It's been a great ride, but I'm now working full time at Girlie Action, so I think I'm gonna put the bloggage on hiatus for awhile.

I've never been busier in my life, but I can assure you, it's all for the best - the job is amazing! I'm working with phenomenal artists (check out the roster on the Girlie site!). Basically, things have gotten quite exciting, to the point where I just don't have time left for bloggin'. I love you all so much; it's been so great hearing from you guys over the past year and a half...feel free to reach out anytime if you wanna stay in touch - my personal email = keaseymedia@gmail.com.

I'm gonna leave you with a few new videos of my best friend/partner in crime, Christopher Paul Stelling (in HD, no less!). Saw these dudes (and dudette!) last Friday night at Market Hotel with Teengirl Fantasy and Beach Fossils. Pretty epic show all around...very cool that they went from Market Hotel to Late Night with Jimmy Fallon in the matter of a week. Gotta love Brooklyn!

I'm gonna say it...Lagoon might be one of the most exciting bands in Brooklyn today. Between Alex Drewchin's soaring, hypnotic vocals, and Steven Vega's intense, swirling guitar riffs, these guys are a force of beautiful chaos to be reckoned with. Combine them with a live psychedelic video like this, and you have yourself a party!

Christopher Paul Stelling Live @ Union Hall (WHOLE SHOW!)

Hello all!

It's been ages since I last posted (apologies, as always!), but trust me, big things are on the way. Things like this. Last week, Christopher Paul Stelling had the pleasure of gracing the stage at Union Hall, thanks to our pal Jonny Leather. Chris put on a phenomenal show, as always, and luckily this time Cait Davis shot the show!

Not only is Christopher Paul Stelling a phenomenal songwriter and musician; he's an interesting cat, and most certainly one of New York City's best kept secrets...for now. Stelling's prolific songs conjure up religious imagery, folklore, and other eternal questions, evoking a sense of storytelling that is rarely heard these days.

Hope you all get a chance to sit back, crack a beer, and watch the show in its duration (somewhere around 45min all together). One of my favorite things about seeing Chris live is that you know you'll never get the same show twice. He's got hilarious stage banter, and dynamic (and sometimes different) versions of his classic tunes all the time.

Bands I Managed to Catch Live in 2009

Well, it's December, once again...a time to reflect on the year gone past, the friends you met, good times had, and great shows I saw. As we all know, I've been a little lazy on this blog for the past 6 weeks. Apologies, but I have been very, very busy doing a host of freelance work.

I just spent several hours reminiscing on 2009, and the live music I caught this year. After digging through a year's worth of facebooking, and picking my brain, I've managed to come up with a pretty comprehensive list of artists I managed to make it out to see. This list is by no means in any order, and some bands I caught multiple times (and by multiple I mean 2-15, depending). Here they are, with a little snippet on each.

Many thanks to my comrades and colleagues who made all this possible for a mostly unemployed kid. Enjoy.

Zambri - super fun sisterly brooklyn indie pop.

Devries - alt/psych group from new york. kinda dark, catchy, very awesome.

Beach Fossils - amazing 60's folky/surf revivalists. fantastic show.

Eartheater - fronted by Alex Drewchin, whom the world will soon know. hauntingly psychedelic and heavy...definitely an exciting band to watch in 2010. caught them a few times, and they were some of the best shows i saw all year.

Metallica - @ Madison Square Garden...it was awesome. lots of old shit, lots of new shit.

The Jesus Lizard - @ The Fillmore. It was incredible.

French Horn Rebellion - saw them a bunch, always a blast. great synth pop from brooklyn.

The Mighty Five - great set at Santos.

NoYesNo - very funky, good time.

ArpLine - saw them a ton. incredibly technical, progressive art rock. 2010 will also be good to them. New album in February.

Christopher Paul Stelling - best folk singer/songwriter in brooklyn, hands down. go see him any time you can, each show is an experience all of its own.

Alex Drewchin - another one of Brooklyn's best kept secrets. keep your eye out for any & all musical projects that she is involved in. they are all insanely great.

Ivana XL - wonderful, quirky folk songstress in Brooklyn.

Arms - awesome solo artist.

Hooray For Earth - catchy, thrashy indie rock. fantastic songwriting, definitely check them out.

Francis & The Lights - Francis is performer all of his own, with a great band. They've got soul, funk, and style.

Pattern Is Movement - Fun duo from Philly. Lots of sound, great show.

Let's Wrestle - UK indie rock, saw them at CMJ. great band.

Takka Takka - psychedelic indie/pop with soul and depth. also one of my faves in BK.

Naked Hearts - great chemistry, fun songs. good band.

Anamanaguchi - <3 my anamanabroz. crazy awesome chiptune masters of destruction. amazing live show, they rule.

Drink Up Buttercup - also from Philly. also great.

Darwin Deez - Brooklyn's Darwin Deez is bringin the dance back to the party. some of the most fun i had all year was at darwin showz!

Bottle Up & Go - Bluesy, thrashy, honest rock. Fantastic band. Lots to come from them.

Savoir Adore - dreamy, quirky, fun indie pop. watch out for them too. love 'em.

Christopher Raiche - beautifully wistful, engaging songwriter. check him out.

Tree Roots - great band. it's everything that is folk and rock and awesome.

Deleted Scenes - saw them a few times, always good.

Loxsly - really exciting band. looking forward to more from them.

Unicycle Loves You - well crafted tunes.

Chromeo - how could Chromeo not be awesome?! tons of fun.

The Giraffes - one of the best true rock & roll shows i saw all year.

The Pretenders - Chrissy Hynde wouldn't let me eat meat. pretty boring show, left early.

Apes & Androids - most epic band of all time. i will never wear out their one and only album. i will miss these bros. some of the most fun i ever had in brooklyn to date were at A&A shows.

The Death Set - the muthafuckin death set...always a blast.

Of Montreal - saw 'em late night at a private fashion week party. incredible seeing them up close & personal.

PFUNKT - one man party, every time. lots to come from him.

Database - crazy brazilian electro. good stuff.

Shudder To Think - saw their last show ever at bowery ballroom. high energy/emotions. good night!

Freshkills - one of the best post-punk groups in brooklyn. look into them.

Phantogram - female fronted, big beats. sultry, lots of sounds and great.

Your Vegas - good show.

BoysNoize - euro dubstep...at summerstage!

Drop The Lime - local dubstep...at summerstage! ;)

Mon Khmer - incredible, technical indie rock with a big sound.

Bela Fleck & Toumani Diabate - really cool, twangy world muzak.

My Bloody Valentine - the absolute loudest show i've ever heard in my life. i was impressed.

Arctic Monkeys - @ All Points West. Alex Turner & Co. are bringing irresistable British indiepop back to the forefront.

Tim & Eric - Great Job!

Gogol Bordello - one of the highest energy sets i saw through the blazing hot summer. love them.

Neko Case - she was Neko Case.

Fleet Foxes - played an awesomely soggy set at All Points West...hypnotic and beautiful.

Jay-Z - he opened with No Sleep Til Brooklyn. AMAZING.

Ra Ra Riot - very good from what i saw. tight band, unfortunately only caught about 20 minutes.

The National - one of my faves around. made the monsoon rains at all points west bearable :)

Yeah Yeah Yeahs - saw them several times this summer...always phenomenal.

Crystal Castles - holy seizure-inducing lightshow!

Damian Marley & Nas - inventing the term reggaengsta. great stuff.

Boombox - hypnotic, bluesy, electronic jam band. always fun.

The Disco Biscuits - they were The Disco Biscuits

Shpongle - sweet euro-psytrance

Prometheus - more psytrance. not so bad.

Dr. Dog - great blues/folk/indie blend.

Yeasayer - one of the most exciting bands in the land? Odd Blood is a masterpiece. 2010 is gonna rule.

The Hold Steady - awesome set in philly. cut short by thunder & lightning (via the heavens)

Wiz Khalifa - what up pittsburgh?! saw a smokin' set of his at the studio at webster hall.

Mission of Burma - great show at the pool parties from these seminal post-punk vets.

Ponytail - spastic and awesome.

Fucked Up - pink eyes keepin hardcore alive!

Matisyahu - surprisingly lots of fun.

Umphrey's McGee - always pretty mind bending

John Fairhurst - this dude from Manchester, UK played a set of his incredible slide oriented steel guitar in my living room en route to SXSW. Amazing.

Liz Green - Also played my living room w/ Fairhurst. Wonderful fellow folk songstress from Manchester

Explosions In The Sky - @ SummerStage. one of the best shows of the summer.

Castanets - opened for Explosions...meh. I think soemthing was off.

Controlled Storms - one of my favorites. totally psychedelic post-rock with entrancing songwriting. watch out for these guys.

White Rabbits - brutally awesome.

Hockey - funky, dancey, tight.

Portugal The Man - raucous, soulful indie rock.

Chairlift - brooklyn pop. fun show.

Gomez - fun.

Animal Collective - awesome daytime set at Bonnaroo. psychedelic, heavy, bassy.

Grizzly Bear - always good.

TV On the Radio - amazing as ever. only getting better.

David Byrne - saw him twice, and they both pretty much completed my life. talking heads are one of my all time faves.

Phish - got a soft spot in my heart for them. always a wonderful experience.

Public Enemy - YES!!!!! I saw Flava Flav & Chuck D. and life was good.

Femi Kuti - shit yes.

Jimmy Buffett - surprise guest at Bonnaroo! awesomely nostalgic.

Girl Talk - yeahhh pittsburgh! Gregg Gillis, always killin it. He's good at what he does.

Paul Oakenfold - good times.

William Elliot Whitmore - awesomely crafted, soulful rock & roll with an edge.

Rodrigo y Gabriela - great set at bonnaroo

Bon Iver - finally saw him, believe the hype. amazing.

Wilco - Jeff Tweedy is amazing.

Nine Inch Nails - Late night at Bonnaroo. YES. Fucking unreal.

MGMT - huuuuuuge crowd for them late night at Bonnaroo. They lived up on a massive stage, sounded great.

Erykah Badu - as beautiful & soulful as you can imagine she would be.

On Saturday, I ventured out to The Bell House in Brooklyn for Jonny Leather's birthday festivities, which included an all-day show and his book release (How I Lost My Hearing...check it out at www.JonnyLeather.com). I saw some great performances from Ivana XL, Arms, and several others.

Ivana XL's set particularly caught my attention...her coy, beautifully crafted songs were the perfect accompaniment to a Saturday afternoon full of Guinness + friends at the Gowanus's best new venue. I think we'll all definitely be hearing more from her in the near future.

What's up yall? I feel like I keep apologizing every other post, but I've been crazy busy as of late. Lots of changes going on here in Brooklyn right now, all for the best. Got some great new roommates, a "love life" (her name is Rachel, and she is very awesome), and oh yeah, one of those "jobs."

I'll be starting at Passionate Marketing next week doing Digital PR/Branding. They're a super exciting boutique marketing firm with some great music+lifestyle+culture type of accounts. They're responsible for breaking Daft Punk when their first record broke back in the 90's, so they're already cool in my book. They've got some other great accounts now, including artists from Atlantic, Warner Brothers, and many more. Also some luxury brands like Gautier. Rain Machine

Rain Machine is the new solo project from Kyp Malone, guitarist/singer of TV On the Radio. Brooding guitars and quivering, haunting lyrics dominate this live video, shot on the streets of LA. The album version is a bit more in yr face (free mp3 can be found if you search your local interweb), but this video truly shows Mr. Malone's enigmatic versatility.

The debut album from his new moniker comes out September 22 thru Anti, and he's about to embark on a month-long tour in support. I will most certainly be at the Bell House checking him out in a few weeks!

Rock The Bells

Unfortunately I had to miss this year's installment of Rock The Bells out at Jones Beach, but my friend was there to catch it and said it was awesome. Her and ASICS also brought the world's largest Lite Brite in tow with them, which has seen some miles on the festival circuit this summer. Yesterday's news of Michael Jackson's death came as quite the surprise; for once, I wasn't sitting in front of my laptop perusing music blogs...I was actually sitting in Central Park, reading Bukowski's Women and hanging out with Alex Drewchin before her big interview and photo shoot for The Calcutta Blog. It came in the form of a text from a friend, and definitely caught us both off guard.

Immediately my mind started reeling; what could bring down the king of pop?! Drugs? Laser beams? Failed cosmetic surgery? Now, I'm not exactly into "conspiracy theories" or anything like that, but it's been my own personal belief that Michael Jackson has actually been dead for no less than 15 years, and was in fact replaced by some creepy looking white alien.

Seriously, come on now. Look at the timeline photos of the King. I am not trying to dis his reign at the top or anything, but WHAT happened to this tortured individual? MJ needs to be cryogenically frozen so that future peoples can learn a lesson or two about what fame + money + craziness can do to people. As usual, Girl Talk turned out a stellar late-night set at Bonnaroo 2009. Gregg had the packed tent going crazy for the duration of his 90 minute set...I especially liked the several times he called out the 2008/2009 Pittsburgh Penguin Stanley Cup Champs, who won the Cup earlier that night (a game I had to miss, cuz you know, I was probably 50miles from the nearest tv haha).

Hello friends! Sorry I've been so MIA over the past 10 days or so...had to run back to PA for a wedding, and caught Phish's Pittsburgh show while I was at it (kind of a weak show to be honest).

Anyway, here are a couple videos from Crystal Castles. They're another great Brooklyn band that I just caught for the first time down at Bonnaroo. Their late-night set was kickass; seizure inducing strobe lights, dense fog machines and all! Check these out, see what ya think...definitely highly recommended jams.

APTBS is a great lo-fi shoegaze group from here in Brooklyn, living up to their reputation as being the loudest band in Brooklyn. Their homebase is Death By Audio, which functions as a performance space, recording studio for Death By Audio Records, and living space. It's also where Oliver Ackermann (lead singer/guitarist) builds his renowned custom Death By Audio guitar effects pedals. Awesome place, and great band taboot.

If you're going to see them, take earplugs, or your ears will hate you for days after...made that mistake once and learned my lesson. Amazing band though, great live performance too. They're playing w/ Holy Fuck tomorrow (May 22nd) at the Music Hall of Williamsburg, then Saturday at Bowery Ballroom.

Savoir Adore is a great experimental indie-poppin' group from here in NYC. They recently shot this video with the $99 Music Video peoples...definitely a fun video for a fun band!

They'll be playing at PopGun Booking's Loose Nukes monthly tomorrow night at The Delancey w/ Deleted Scenes and Woodhands, where they will also be releasing their new EP. If you live in NYC, you should make it out for this...they're really great live! I've seen them a bunch of times, and was honored to have them play in my backyard at April's Unplugged in Bed Stuy. Come out tomorrow and see what you're missing!

I've been into these dudes for years now. One of my college roommates was a big fan, so when he came to visit me in NYC in 2006, we made it a point to go check them out. Glad we did; the show was pretty over the top intense. FMTM are kind of proggy rock from san francisco, with samples from political speeches taking the place of having a singer...although they do scream quite a bit in between. Check 'em out, definitely worthwhile!
